“A fool sees not the same tree that a wise man sees.” says English poet William Blake. Film dramaturgy is both about how to make everybody see the same tree and how to make this an entertaining experience. Austrian Filmmaker Ip Wischin shared his unique techniques on film dramaturgy in a lecture at the 10th Annual International Student Film Festival Hollywood (ISFFH).

Film is a visual art form designed to evoke thoughts and emotions on a collective level. Mr. Wischin shared his “Think-Negative-Technique” with the audience giving interesting and smart examples of how a filmmaker can get his message across to his audience. If you want to show someone looking thirsty, you must show them watching another person drinking or show another element of water such as squeezing the last of water from a sponge. Show the opposite to portray how important the action is. You can show how much someone loves another by showing how much they hate that person; you can’t hate someone that you don’t love.

After the lecture filmmakers were discussing these analogies with each other and sharing their own examples. Mr. Wischin talked with filmmakers individually helping them further explore the “Think-Negative-Technique” and has made himself available for further consultations.

During the ISFFH awards ceremony, Robin Saban, ISFFH Founder and President presented Mr. Wischin with a Certificate of Appreciation for his support of the next generation of filmmakers.
